In this special five-part Compass series ‘For Better For Worse’, guest presenter and ex-ad agency creative director Jane Caro explores the secret to successful long-term relationships. The series starts on 6:30pm, Sunday, September 20 on ABC.

In For Better For Worse, five couples lay bare their joys, challenges and heartaches. What makes relationships work, what keeps people together and what have they learned along the way?

Viewers meet Hare Krishna’s Pratapana and Jayasri who were celibate before meeting on the day of their arranged wedding, Saara and Ramzi whose traditional Muslim gender roles were turned upside down. Country couple Brad and Ruth reveal their struggles with addiction, while Maltese Catholic Carmen and social worker Jessica started life as best friends, and war time sweethearts Anne and Dan share the hard work of a 72 year commitment.

From tender beginnings these partnerships have withstood the test of time. Interviewed by Caro, each couple shares the nitty gritty of each relationship; how they met, their first impressions, dealing with the in-laws, navigating the tough times of illness, infidelity and the chaos of having children, right through to the unglamorous division of domestic labour. Caro also asks the big life questions, can sex survive longevity and how will they cope when one partner dies first?
