Cinema and outdoor advertising group Val Morgan | VMO presented its outlook for 2019 at Palace Cinemas Raine Square yesterday.

The cinema year is set to be dominated once again by superhero and animated family film franchises.

Box office receipts hit a world record last year and in Australia, it exceeded $1.2 billion for the third year in a row. Managing Director Wes Stansfield said movies continue to generate strong engaged audiences despite the availability of other options like in-home viewing.
The Experience Economy - a special insight report released by NAB in May this year -showed that people are spending up on experiences and entertainment. Against that backdrop, Stansfield said movies are far-and-away the number 1 form of ticketed entertainment in Australia.

A schedule of over 550 movies is set to be rolled-out in 2019, led by Captain Marvel and an as yet un-named 4th instalment of the Avengers franchise, which Group Sales Manager Michelle Hawkins said will be the most anticipated superhero movie of the decade.

Other releases expected to deliver big audiences include Captain Marvel; a live action version of The Lion King; and Star Wars IX - the third and final instalment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy and ninth instalment of the Skywalker saga.
