News Ltd Young Lions finalists announced

CANNES-Here we go.JPGFirst round judging of the News Limited 2009 Young Lions competition is now complete for Media, Print and Cyber categories.

News Limited runs the local competition to discover six Young Lions to send to Cannes as Australian representatives in Print, Cyber, and Media categories. Now in its second year, the News Limited Young Lions 2009 competition attracted 171 entries from across the country.

Says Garth Agius, Group Director of Marketing, Advertising &Integration at News Limited: “The Young Lions competition is a uniqueand exclusive element of Cannes made available through News Limited asOfficial Australian Representatives of the International AdvertisingFestival.

“We invited judges from across the Media and Creative industry aroundthe country to be involved in the judging process who all agreed thelevel of entries received this year was outstanding in all threecategories”, he said.

Print Finalists

The 2009 print brief required entrants to develop an executablecampaign for Moshtix.com.au online ticketing agency. The brief requiredentrants to utilize a creative shape from News Limited’s ‘Think Outsidethe Rectangle’ initiative that encourages the use of creative shapes innewspapers.

Print judges commented on the work as inventive use of the medium and a great display of the young talent in the industry.

Cyber Finalists

2009 Cyber brief required entrants to develop on online campaign tocelebrate Vogue Magazine’s 50th anniversary edition. The objective ofthe online campaign was to attract new readers and increase copy sales.Judges felt this year’s work was superior to last year with some greatcampaigns on display.

Media Finalists

This year, Media category entrants had the opportunity to compete at astate level before progressing to the final round. Finalists werejudged by state based industry panels and have been drawn from Sydney,Melbourne and Brisbane to compete in teams of two for their state.

Angus Frazer, Strategy Director at Mitchell & Partners said: “YoungLions is an important initiative by News Limited as it actively fostersthe industry’s young talent and puts Australia on the internationalstage. This year’s competition produced a high standard of entrants,which has made the judging difficult but more exciting”.

The final round of the Young Lions Media competition will commence inSydney on Wednesday April 22nd. Finalists will be issued with a mediabrief, and will have 24 hours to prepare their response and presentback to the judging panel.

“We designed the second and final round to emulate the Cannesexperience, whereby finalists are provided with a brief and 24 hours torespond in a presentation to a select panel of judges,” said Agius.

All finalists will be invited to a special event on April 23rd, 2009for the announcement of the six winning Young Lions who will travel toCannes in June and represent Australia.
