Earth Hour wins Bronze Lion in Design

Australia won just one Bronze Design Lion tonight, while NewZealand picked up a Silver and a Bronze. The Aussie win came for Leo Burnett Sydney and its ‘EarthHour – Vote Earth Design’. ALT Group Auckland won Silver for its ‘Hudson GavinMartin Identity’ and a Bronze for Colenso BBDO for its work for Papakura &Franklin District Council ‘Bleeding Billboard’

Campaigns to have missed out on metal include BMF’s ‘TED696Project’ and Leo Burnett’s ‘Nature Trays’ for McDonald’s.

Australia had five shortlisted entries, to New Zealand’sthree.

The Grand Prix was awarded to McCann Worldgroup Hong Kongfor its campaign for Nike Hong Long ‘Paper Battlefield’. The campaign topromote basketball for Nike saw McCann’s design a template which theprofessional basketball players then used to design personalised posters.

Jury president Sylvia Vitale Rotta, chief executive of TeamCreatif, said the entries had been an improvement on last year, which was theinaugural Design Lions: “Last year the entries were good, but there wasn’tanything particularly innovative. You could feel that people were ‘lets sendsomething and see how it’s going to go. This year you really felt people weresending bigger, larger projects. The creative level was very strong, and allvery contemporary. You didn’t feel you were seeing projects that were re-hashedor projects done three of four years ago.”

Vince Frost, chief executive of Frost Design, was originallydue to be juror for Australia but had to withdraw at late notice.
