gem.jpgzspace has won two World Broadcast Design Gold Awards in New York. One for Nine

Network Australia’s digital channel GEM and one for ABC Children’s Television’s Giggle & Hoot: Sweet Dreams.

GEM won world gold for best Integrated Media, Network/Channel Package Design:Image All Media, and Giggle & Hoot for Other Design Applications: Music Video or Short Subject.

zspace was selected by Nine to create the look for GEM after their highly acclaimed

design work for GO!.

With a mix of new content, classic comedies and drama series, favourite movies and HD

sport, GEM, which stands for General Entertainment Movies, is aimed at the

sophisticated and discerning 35+ viewer, and needed a look to match.

zspace was given a tight three weeks to execute the entire branding package: including

logo; idents; and promo package design.

Jean-Christophe Danoy created the GEM font from scratch in its signature plush violet,

established by Nine, giving it a high end and individual look and feel. The result is

unique, spellbinding and essentially geared towards a high-end entertainment feel. A

jewel motif seemed too obvious; so the look evolved using light as a base. The

introduction of moving fluid lines and sheer material gives GEM a sensual quality.

Says Andrew Peace, Nine’s executive creative director: “We are thrilled with receiving

such a prestigious award in such a competitive category. The truth is zspace created

and delivered the entire package in less than three weeks. That itself deserved an

award, but to create a package that has world wide recognition is amazing.”

With Sweet Dreams, ABC Children’s Television’s Giggle & Hoot continues on its gold

path, as zspace also picked up gold for the network with Giggle & Hoot: Lullaby at the

2010 World Promax/BDA awards.

Says Jan Stradling, executive producer, ABC Children’s Television: “This was a great

collaboration between the Giggle and Hoot team, the designers at zspace, and of

course, musicians, Paul Kingston and Cain Horton. It’s fantastic to be recognised on the

world stage and to have created something so special for Australian pre-schoolers.”
