Kiwis see red about 'Ginger Swap' campaign for Hakanoa Ginger Beer via M&C Saatchi, Auckland

Screen shot 2012-08-07 at 5.27.06 PM.jpgThe NZ Herald reports that a ginger beer maker whose advertising offered to swap a ginger child for the drink has apologised for offending people, and has asked for police help given the strength of the criticism.

The public backlash against the campaign, created by M&C Saatchi Auckland, left Hakanoa Ginger Beer maker Rebekah Hay frightened and in tears, reports the NZ Herald.

The campaign offered parents of ginger children the chance to trade their "spawn" for a six-pack of ginger beer.

Ms Hay (below left) revealed that she only agreed to the campaign after M&C Saatchi executive creative director and partner Dave King came to her with the idea after his ginger-haired son had been bullied.
Screen shot 2012-08-07 at 9.21.46 AM.jpgHerald on Sunday columnist Kerrie Woodham certainly saw red. Says Woodham: "If Hakanoa and the ad-land dad had really wanted to promote positivity around redheads, there could have been so many, many ways to do that. As it is, the kids aren't going to see the reverse psychology in this."

Can't see what all the fuss is about? I'd give away a ginger kid for one bottle,
never mind a six pack...

@ ginger lee: Yeah but your clearly an ignorant fool, so i can see why you wouldn't see a problem with this campaign.

Seems like a fair swap to me too. Certainly a better deal than getting Face Palm's sense of humor.

Fanta...yes thats my nick name because Im a ginger. And thankfully one with a sense of humour. And a soul. It's so extreme it's impossible to take seriously. A bit like the people who are complaining.

Obviously the general public doesn't think redhead jokes are as hilarious as the advertising industry does.

@Face Palm

Get a sense of humour and a dictionary.

Feel like I saw it before by MIA https://vimeo.com/11219730

Also I'd like to say Fanta's full nickname is Fanta Pants.

That is all.

Yo...agree with L.....bang all the Rangas on the MIA bus.

Fanta said:

@L yep thats my full name. Actually that MIA video is possibly the only thing to ever have offended me (re ranga's). I love a good double standard.

Not offensive really. Not funny really.

What a total merkin - a ginger one at that. What was he thinking when he came up with this idea?

http://marque.co.nz/brand-suicide - lays the blame on the D man, but the client should know when you play with fire you get gingerfied.

Just no need to sling off at other people's children, full stop. I won't buy the product, because I do think we need to have standards. Also HATE that tampon ad with the V word ... not for the V word ... but why is the chick naked and talking about her smelly V? eeeeeeeeeeeew Standards, please!

Pedant said:

Why wasn't this story posted on the NZ version of this blog?

But wait, there's more! said:

Ginger-bashing AND racial stereotyping all in one convenient package.

Love the stereotypical (and racist) indian shop owner as well. This ad is all kinds of wrong. But so funny to look at from a far.

Seriously? said:

I take more issue with the fact that she is pretending to drink (or rather sing into) a bottle that still has the cap on.

wrong on so many

Here's the great Dave King responding to an article that's pretty much giving him the finger for his role in this. He's still trying to spin this as being a win for himself and the brand.

@seriously... she's not pretending to drink or sing into the bottle... its a provocative gesture thats derived to appeal to males... if nothing else, this situation may just make a few more people aware of the manipulative, condescending ways of advertising companies.
