Based on the technology industry Hackathon concept, the alive not-for-profit Appathon is the country’s very first technology event to be created specifically to produce mobile solutions for organisations and groups working in the not for profit sector.

Teams will be offered real-life operational scenarios from some of the country’s most deserving not-for-profit organisations including Cystic Fibrosis Australia, Suicide Prevention Australia, Mission Australia, Destiny Rescue, Hope Street and The Nelune Foundation.

An industry-leading panel of judges including Trent Lund, PWC partner responsible for innovation and digital ventures, and alive chairman Chris Gabriel will consider the entries based on innovation, productivity and creativity. The winning team will receive a selection of prizes, including the opportunity to work alongside alive’s world-class development team to bring their ideas to life.

The alive not-for-profit Appathon will be kindly supported by commercial partners Macquarie Telecom, PWC, Microsoft, Hoyts and Lets Together with more to be confirmed.

Alive’s CEO Luke Harvey-Palmer said he was excited to be part of such an important event.

Says Harvey-Palmer: “At alive we pride ourselves on a mobile first approach to designing better business. In the last few years mobile devices have rewritten the way we live, work and play so creating really useful technology that lives on beyond delivery can make everybody’s lives better.

“And it’s not just big business who can benefit from the mobile revolution. Selecting the not-for-profit sector for our inaugural Appathon means we can share some of our experience to help those who need it most.

“Curating this event has been a really inspiring experience, and something I am incredibly proud to be part of.”

Dr Bronwen Dalton, national manager research at Mission Australia said the Appathon was an exciting opportunity to help them overcome the digital divide.

Says Dalton: “An app would allow Mission Australia’s community service workers to be even more effective at assisting disadvantaged and Indigenous young people, particularly in remote communities.”
