The Rocket, a debut feature by Australian writer/director Kim Mordaunt, was shot entirely in Laos. Curious Film’s Luke Haigh was post supervisor overseeing the post production and visual effects on the film. It won several awards at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, including Best Feature in the Generation K program. It won Best Narrative Feature, Best Actor and the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival and took out the Audience Award at the recent Sydney Film Festival.

From Chinese director Jia Zhang-Ke, this year’s winner of Best Screenplay at Cannes A Touch of Sin is a confronting look at modern China and the domestic conflict its newfound wealth has brought. Following four characters from different provinces, the film tells the story of a miner as he revolts against corruption, a migrant worker who finds possibility in a firearm, a receptionist assaulted by a rich client and a young factory worker desperate to improve his situation.

Paradise, a collective name for a trilogy of films (Love, Faith and Hope) is directed by Austrian auteur Ulrich Seidl. The trilogy revolves around the examination of sex, faith, religion and family told from the perspective of three different characters in alternate settings. Each film from the trilogy will screen individually at the festival.

Says Peter Grasse, Curious executive producer: “We are really excited to see all five films screen at the Melbourne International Film Festival, which is well known for showcasing some of the most intriguing films from around the world. We look forward to celebrating these films at the upcoming festival.”
