JoshD.jpgAustralian director Josh Dawson (left), son of Grey Melbourne executive creative director Nigel Dawson, has walked away with the Special Jury prize for his film ‘A Great Man‘ at the 9th annual HollyShorts Film Festival held at the Roosevelt Hotel Ballroom and lobby in LA.

Says Dawson: “We thought we should enter since the festival is voted top 25 short film festivals as well as plays at the fantastic Chinese theatre. At first I thought the Chinese theatre was no more then a little quiet cinemas in the heart of LA’s china town. Little did I know it is one of the most important and historical cinemas in Hollywood and even gets blown up in Iron Man 3.

“This festival was also the premiere of A Great Man so we were just very excited to see if the audience liked it, we didn’t expect an award at all. I actually walked into the award ceremony at the Roosevelt late and thought I would just go grab a drink from the other side of the room, as I was walking across my name was called out. I didn’t even know what it was for until I looked at the award itself.”

A Great Man was a complete passion job with over half the money crowd funded through Pozible. Filmed in Daylesford with the talented DOP Edward Goldner. It is a story of a group of boys living in a quiet town during the frenzy of 1969’s moon landing with two contrasting characters. One very reserved and the other very daring. It takes them to a tipping point where the audience is left wondering what it means to be great.
