Case Study: How Kojo created innovative CGI automotive content for Mazda Australia spot
Case Study: Continuing the company’s focus of telling stories like no other, the integrated storytelling business has broken new ground in the visual effects realm to produce computer-generated automotive content for Mazda Australia’s Mazda 2.
Says Dale Roberts, Kojo CEO: “Taking a proactive approach, Kojo found a new way to produce high-quality car sequences quickly and cost-effectively for Melbourne agency CHE Proximity and their client Mazda.
“Kojo successfully created photo realistic automotive CGI, added simulated driving, and seamlessly composited it into live action backgrounds.
“CHE Proximity provided us with a high-resolution CAD model of the Mazda 2, which was then put through Kojo’s Visual FX pipeline.
“Our 3D cameras tracked the original live action footage, and computer-generated cars were added, animated, lit and rendered to fit into the environment.
“These assets are also completed at print-resolution, allowing for images to be used in press and photography projects.”
Kojo has more than 20 years experience in high-end VFX and auto-industry production.
Roberts said automotive commercials traditionally required large film crews and incurred
high travel costs.
Says Roberts: “They are often faced with expensive re-shoots or fix ups as soon as a different car, model type or colour is needed.
“There is also no way of changing the choreography of the cars or the art direction of how
they look after the shoot.
“Showcasing CHE Proximity’s client, Kojo has created a new way for creative agencies
and their clients to use any vehicles in any setting, and at any time of year, with full creative
and technical control.
“The end result is stunningly high-quality but also cost effective and fully changeable.”

Cool, when you discover new tech like CGI!
Cool. But it still looks very cg. Very interested to see what we can do in a couple of years. Dare I say it would look much more realistic.
Wayne and Annon,
sure, it still looks like CG.
But compared to what other car manufacturers are putting up, this looks as real as it gets.
The fact that Kojo are delivering best in class animation is one thing. Add to that the ability to create any camera move in any environment with any car in any colour, and you really do have something to crow about.
To reduce it to “Cool when you discover new tech like CGI” makes you sound like a simpleton.
What Marque said.
This seems like a pretty standard CGI job, and Kojo’s capabilities are no different to dozens of shops in Australia… (and I’ve used a lot better to be honest).
And your comment “…any car in any colour” makes you sound worse than a simpleton.
Marque and Sam…let us judge your work not you! It really is as simple as that!
Yes it does look very CG, Airbag did a great job with one of their spots a year or two ago, very photo real (Disc: I’ve never taken work to Airbag or have any affiliation with them).
And yes, there are a lot of CG Houses out there doing this Australia wide, some better some worse.
And YES, Mazda did Full CG Zoom Zoom retail commercials about Five or Six years ago.
So nothing New here.
I would love to know who ‘The CG Feel’ is and thank them very much for their kind comment! (I am from Airbag Productions obviously!).
