Former Clemenger BBDO creative director and chairman David Blackley now creates for charity

image006.jpgFormer Clemenger BBDO creative director and chairman David Blackley (left) always fancied reinventing himself in retirement. Since leaving the ad industry after a 36-year career Blackley has channelled his creativity into painting, winemaking, and chairing the board at Brainwave, Australia’s only charity supporting the families of children with brain illnesses and injuries. Now Blackley is set to combine all three at a tongue-in-cheek chairman’s charity art auction he’s dubbed WAM (Wine, Art, Music).

 

On Wednesday 28 May Blackley will unveil artworks inspired by his recent trip to Australia’s red centre. WAM kicks off at 6pm at The Savage Club in Bank Place, Melbourne – a fun celebration of Brainwave’s 20th birthday and a light-hearted art auction whose proceeds will be used to help families with the purchase of essential mobility equipment and other assistance required for their children’s ongoing care.

Up for grabs are luminous artworks created by Blackley for WAM following an art camp he attended in the Central Desert outside Alice Springs. WAM will also showcase the talents of musician Peter Sullivan, art historian Kenneth Park and Shadowfax winemaker Matt Harrop. Harrop and Blackley have teamed up at the latter’s hobby vineyard in Tallarook to create an impressive shiraz that will also be for sale on the night.

 

Tickets are $75. All money raised will help Brainwave continue its acclaimed work, which has won support from Patrons like swim star Michael Klim and rugby great George Gregan as well as principal partner Mercedes-Benz.

 

Blackley says the art auction is a fun way to combine his love of painting with his commitment to Brainwave.

Says Blackley: “I’m in awe of the impact of Brainwave’s support on families, many of whom are really struggling with the day to day realities of caring for sick kids. Some people need help funding home modifications or expensive equipment. Others just really need a break and to spend some time with others who understand their situation. That’s where Brainwave’s camps and family fun days are so effective. In some cases these are the only outings a family can manage for the year, financially or logistically. It’s a break from the isolation that can set in when you’re caring for sick kids at home. The effects on all involved are pretty profound.”
