Sydney-based ad agency The Works reveals Instagram’s hot spots: Sydney versus Melbourne
Instagram’s most active suburbs in Sydney and Melbourne have been revealed in a first of a kind study via Sydney-based advertising agency The Works, that uncovers the individual suburbs of each capital city.
According to the study measuring the average total posts over a 90-day period, Instagram’s most loved suburb in Sydney is Sydney CBD followed by Bondi Beach, Hurstville, Maroubra and Manly. In Melbourne, the top suburbs are Melbourne CBD followed by Malvern, Coburg North, Footscray and Kew East.
The Works has analysed more than 3.7 million geotagged Australian Instagram images since the platform launched in 2010.
The most popular Instagram posts in Sydney are portrait shots lead by artistic shots and then food. In Melbourne food is a clear favourite for Instagrammers followed by artistic shots and then fashion.
Says Douglas Nicol, creative partner at The Works: “Having access to geographical data on Instagram offers brands wishing to connect with consumers an even deeper insight into how the social platform is being adopted across the country.”
Instagram is the fastest growing social media platform in Australia with 2,060,000 active Australian users in August 2014, according to estimates from socialmedianews.com.au.
Nicol will take part in Social Media Week Sydney keynote presentation The Australian Landscape held at The Beresford Hotel, Surry Hills, Sydney, at 1pm today. He will also present Over Anxious, Over Shared; Over Social, Under the Microscope – How Aussies Really Use Social Media on Wednesday September 24th 2014 at 6pm.

People take pictures.
In places where there are more people, more pictures get taken.
Stunning insight.
Coming next…The Works reveals water is wet.
The wonderful people of HOxton Park would like to thank Instagram for not knowing where the fuck they live.
The folk at HOxton Park would like to thank Instagram for not knowing how to spell their suburb;s name. If indeed that was not just a demographic decision & a hopeless speller.
