Seasoned beer marketer Richard Oppy has been confirmed as marketing director at Carlton & United Breweries (CUB).

CUB’s chief operating officer Mike Walsh said Oppy has the experience and enthusiasm to lead the marketing team through what has become a complex beer market.

Says Walsh: “Richard has worked across every brand in the business and I am confident he will passionately lead our marketing team and become a valued member of our executive team.”

Oppy has acted in the role since late last year when former director Peter McLoughlin stepped down due to ill health.

Oppy has worked across numerous roles at CUB including playing a lead role in the relaunch of Victoria Bitter, the launch of Carlton Dry and working across the international portfolio.

The Melbourne born and bred father of three joined CUB in 2001. He says Carlton Dry has given him one of his greatest professional moments; leading the launch of the brand back in 2007 that has gone on to become one of the fastest growing brands in the country.

Oppy says one of the biggest challenges he and the team at CUB face is turning the beer category around.

Says Oppy: “We know we have to be bold when it comes to innovation and make sure we’re nimble enough to deliver what drinkers want.

“We will also continue delivering value for our customers.”

Oppy said he felt thrilled, but humbled to be able to lead a great bunch of people who are passionate about their brands and about beer and cider.

He said that while it’s something all beer people get asked, it’s too hard to pick one favourite brew.

Says Oppy: “It really depends on the occasion, however nothing beats sharing a Carlton Draught fresh from the tap in a pub with friends.”
