Cannes Contenders: J. Walter Thompson

How will Australia perform at Cannes this year? In the lead up to the Festival, Campaign Brief will be showcasing the work we hope will impress the judges…

J. Walter Thompson, Melbourne

Created by Festival authors and Melbourne actors (exclusively for this unique experience) J. Walter Thompson embedded stories in Melbourne’s iconic laneways. Anyone with a smartphone could access these stories. But the agency gave it a twist. When the user approached the end of a laneway, hidden geo-location iBeacons sensed their movement, giving the user a choice of where they wanted the story to go. This opened up hundreds of possible story arcs. All dependent on which path the user took through the city. Each story ended at the Festival Centre and ticket booth.

To promote the Melbourne Writers Festival Twists & Turns app, J. Walter Thompson Melbourne created a cinema ad featuring a lecturas estate lawyer, a haunted house, a freaked out dad and daughter, her creepy identical twin sister and a choice to end the film in equally twisted ways.

JWT client RAC Roadside Assistance is Western Australia’s largest roadside assistance provider with nearly 500,000 members. In an effort to remind drivers that breakdowns can happen anywhere, anytime, JWT Perth and JWT Sydney developed a tongue-in-cheek TVC campaign presenting two unlikely scenarios. In the first, you feign sickness, then head out, surfboard strapped to your car, for a day at the beach. Then your car breaks down next to another stalled vehicle….owned by your boss. In the second, you are ready for a big night out with your hen mates, all dressed as nuns, when you break down opposite a van full of real nuns. What are the chances? Higher than you think.

A man walks into a bar…and meets someone from the future – a bloodied victim of his own alcohol-fuelled violence who tells him how the evening is going to end. “Stop Before It Gets Ugly” is the first advertising campaign of its kind by the New South Wales government, targeting potential aggressors and those who can influence their behavior. The ads talk to people about their drinking behavior, making them aware there is a tipping point when drinking can change their behavior. The aim is to persuade them to think about stopping or slowing down before they reach that point.

Starting with Brazilian Derek Rabelo, who despite being blind, has learned to surf, each inspiring story of “unstoppable” individuals showcases the Nutri-Grain brand values of courage, strength and determination, and dramatises a new brand belief that “the only limits are those you place on yourself.” They also revealed Derek’s latest challenge as he takes up the intensely challenging sport of downhill skateboarding. More ‘unstoppable stories’ are in production.
