Passion Pictures Melbourne signs Robert Valley and Hugo Ramirez to its roster of directors

Rob_Valley_11 (1).jpgPassion Pictures Melbourne has recently made several exciting additions to its global stable of directors signing Canadian native Robert Valley and French director Hugo Ramirez.

Valley, known for his bold, graphic style (as featured in Æon Flux), has received an outstanding reception in the past year for his powerful short film, Pear Cider and Cigarettes – most notably an Annie Award for Best Animated Special Production and an Academy Award nomination for ‘Best Animated Short Film’.

A successful graphic novelist, Valley also has a long collaborative history with British ‘virtual’ band, Gorillaz. Most recently he partnered with Jamie Hewlett (in collaboration with Google Spotlight Stories) for the release of an epic, six-minute animated film. It features four tracks from the band’s album Humanz – ‘Saturnz Barz’ in full, plus highlights of ‘Ascension’, ‘Andromeda’ and ‘We Got The Power’ . The film – ‘Saturnz Barz (Spirit House)’, supported by YouTube – also affords an extraordinary cutting-edge VR video (360-3D).

Hugo_Ramirez_1 (1).jpgRamirez’ eclectic style traverses a ‘craft-made’ feel at one extreme, and a gorgeously-graphic and slick sensibility at the other.  His film “J’ai fait la Fnac – ‘Nekfeu'” was selected for screening at the Annecy International Film Festival in 2016. More recently, Ramirez has applied his considerable talents to creating a film for the Jean Paul Gaultier and Paris Mint collaboration (the fruits of which feature Gaultier’s signature sailor-themed accents applied to coins).

Says Katie Mackin, executive producer, Passion Pictures Melbourne: “We’re committed to bringing the best global talent to the local market and are thrilled to add two such accomplished and different artists to our roster.”
