French’s work is known for its sense of honesty, curiosity and romance. His ability to tell stories through imagery translates beautifully into his motion work to create strong visuals and emotionally driven narratives.

Says French (pictured): “I think SIA and I kind of gravitated toward each other. Their work stood out to me because it had a subtly often lost in advertising. I was looking for people who would support my focus on storytelling and broadening the scope of my work. Genres are great for grouping things after they are made, too often though they restrict creative people. It’s much more fun to create, or document, interesting stories of all sorts, inspiring, funny, weird, wonderful… within stills or motion. Understanding subtleties is the key, which I think they do. We are both really excited to begin this relationship.”

Sam I Am Management founder Samantha Simpson said of the signing: “Michael is a unique creative. He is a man inspired by nature, with a distinct connection to the feminine. These influences lend a charm and authenticity to his image-making and frame a lovely man to work with. I was immediately drawn to Frenchy’s passion for the craft and the sense of play that underscores his approach to image making. His work is technically considered yet uncomplicated, it remains fun and attractive to collaboration.”

Living firstly in the tropics of far north Queensland, then the beaches of Noosa before settling in Sydney it’s easy to see how exploring those environments developed his command of expansive locations and working with natural light.

French’s diverse client list is testament to his ability to realise a commercial brief and includes: Condé Nast Traveller, David Jones, Channel Ten, VANS, Destination NSW, Priceline, Element Skateboards, AMP, MidCity, Oroton, Endota and Blackmores.

He is currently working on his second solo exhibition, a series of quiet landscapes shot on medium format film. These photographs will be hand printed using the first photographic printing technique devised in 1834, a salt printing process. The salt used to develop each individual image has been collected by French from the specific site of the photograph.
