2010 Australian Young Lions finalists announced

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Cannes ceremony-new-SMALL.jpgThe first round of judging of the News Limited 2010 Young Lions Competition is now complete with over 50 senior agency professionals Australia wide having been involved in the judging process. From the 310 entrants in this year’s competition, the judges rewarded 84 talented individuals with a ticket through to the next round where teams will compete in a 24 hour challenge for their chance to win a spot on the Australian Young Lions team in media, print or cyber and represent Australia in the worldwide Young Lions Competition in Cannes.

In the Media category, a total of 16 individuals from four states havebeen selected as state finalists to answer the 24-hour brief on May19-20. Leading the charge of successful media agencies is UniversalMcCann and OMD, each have four individuals selected to compete in thesecond round. MediaCom has two representatives and Mitchell’s,Mindshare, ZenithOptimedia, The Brand Agency and Maxus Perth have onerepresentative each.

Angela Feruglio, Director, Business Planning of Mindshare Melbournecommented following her judging experience in Melbourne:”Congratulations News Limited for developing a fantastic program thatfosters young emerging talent. The ultimate money-can’t-buy prize toCannes certainly generated enthusiastic and passionate entries fromyoung media professionals, who spanned 6 weeks to 4 years inexperience. The standard of presentations were excellent given theirtenure, and sparked interesting discussion amongst the judges as to whocould survive the pressure of the next round.”

In the Print category, judges selected a shortlist of 25 creative teamsto progress to the second round and receive the 24-hour brief. Leadingagencies were Leo Burnett with 3 teams selected and two each fromClemenger BBDO, DDB and JWT. Chris Hitchen, CEO of Getprice, said “Towalk into a room and see over a hundred creative ideas for the Getpricebrand was a huge thrill for me. Some of the best young talent fromaround the country had put an enormous amount of thought and effortinto their work and the results were fantastic from both a creativepoint of view and in terms of meeting the objectives we’d set. To beable to then discuss those ideas with some of Australia’s top creativeminds was a real privilege and determining who made it through to thenext round proved to be a real challenge.”

The judges in the Cyber category selected a shortlist of 9 teams withClemenger BBDO at the top of this table with 2 teams. The successfulentrants together with the print shortlisted teams will receive theirsecond round brief designed to prepare them for the Cannes experienceon May 10.

The three winning teams representing Australia at the 2010 worldwideYoung Lions Competition in Cannes June 20-26 will be announced at anevent to be held on May 20. Winning teams will receive return flights to Nice, accommodation and aYoung Lions registration to the Cannes Festival with access to all theseminars, awards ceremonies, showcases and the Young Lions party. TheYoung Lions registration also allows them to participate in the YoungLions Zone, which includes ten master classes and interactive kiosksshowcasing winning work from the worldwide Young Lions competitions.
