Fenton Stephens Melbourne art director Aaron Tyler’s ‘Straya Cash’ passion project goes viral

After stumbling across the insight that that most Australians don’t know who the people printed on the banknotes are, Tyler has redesigned a new set with Aussie Icons that are instantly recognisable.

StrayaCash_10back.jpgThe reimagined banknotes feature Steve Irwin, Dame Edna, Vegemite, Kathy Freeman and Shane Warne, to name a few.

The project was StrayaCash_20front.jpglaunched on Tyler’s Facebook page on Sunday night, and by the following morning, was shared widely online.

The Huffington Post, Mashable, Buzzfeed, Acclaim, Brown Cardigan, The DailyStrayaCash_50front.jpg Mail, 3AW, Radio National, ABC, Sky, 7, and 9news, subsequently picked up the story.

Straya Cash has started a national conversation. With many people sharing their favourite designs on Facebook and Twitter or suggesting who they would personally like to see on the notes to talk back radio.

So far, Shane Warne, Karl Stefanovic and Corey Worthington have all publically approved the new designs.

The icons were chosen based on their universal Australian appeal.

“I had a massive list of more than 100 to start with and I whittled it down…It turned out to be a combination of people I like and people that polarised Australia at some point,” Tyler explained to the Newcastle Herald.

At Fenton Stephens, Tyler works on brands like AEG Powertools, Isuzu trucks and William Hill Online betting.
