Fenton Stephens Melbourne art director Aaron Tyler’s ‘Straya Cash’ passion project goes viral
Fenton Stephens Melbourne art director Aaron Tyler’s Straya Cash project has gone viral.
After stumbling across the insight that that most Australians don’t know who the people printed on the banknotes are, Tyler has redesigned a new set with Aussie Icons that are instantly recognisable.
The reimagined banknotes feature Steve Irwin, Dame Edna, Vegemite, Kathy Freeman and Shane Warne, to name a few.
The project was launched on Tyler’s Facebook page on Sunday night, and by the following morning, was shared widely online.
The Huffington Post, Mashable, Buzzfeed, Acclaim, Brown Cardigan, The Daily Mail, 3AW, Radio National, ABC, Sky, 7, and 9news, subsequently picked up the story.
The discussion continued on The Project, as well as The Today show.
Straya Cash has started a national conversation. With many people sharing their favourite designs on Facebook and Twitter or suggesting who they would personally like to see on the notes to talk back radio.
So far, Shane Warne, Karl Stefanovic and Corey Worthington have all publically approved the new designs.
The icons were chosen based on their universal Australian appeal.
“I had a massive list of more than 100 to start with and I whittled it down…It turned out to be a combination of people I like and people that polarised Australia at some point,” Tyler explained to the Newcastle Herald.
At Fenton Stephens, Tyler works on brands like AEG Powertools, Isuzu trucks and William Hill Online betting.

On ya legend x
Love the idea but it’s a shame no Aussie sheilas made it on to the designs. Just saying.
thank god our notes will never look like that. would instantly make me become a full time member of a cashless society.
funny, hey but not one of them appeals to me and all say bogan.
Kath and Kim, and Lara Bingle are all Aussie sheilas. Look harder.
It’s a joke, Joyce.
You a bit jealous? Tell us, have you ever done anything that’s gone viral with no money behind it?
You sound like a humourless dolt.
Are we really critiquing a passion project?
Good on you mate. This is fucking cool.
Getting featured in the Huffington Post is actually something all creatives should aspire to.
Great work
Could have used a bit of this plugin.

Great stuff.
This is a passion project because no client would… It feels like a dodgy Melbourne cup promotion for in-agency use only. No wonder The Today Show picked it up – those presenters are all morons. The Huffington Post is unreadable garbage. Oh look, Dame Edna where the Queen should be – Jeebus people are unsophisticated.
