the deer was old, ready to be culled anyway, i’m sure it was terminated humanely, then it was cooked on a BBQ…so fucking what? Just last week i had a lovely char-grilled venison at Aria. this story’s a beat up, plain and simple. (what wasn’t plain or simple was the foie gras i had before the succulent venison…lip smacking!!!)
“Green beer. In harmony with nature. Hmm, I know! Let’s kill an animal, put it’s carcass on a BBQ and also feature five dead pigs.”
Are you guys smoking crack?
You’ve got to dip your lid to the kiwis for spectacularly politically incorrect behavior.
But the only green beer advertising I’m interested in seeing is the Drogladites re-launch of VB.
Well, where is it, hotshots?
Who Cares? I’m from Iowa and working down here! Is there an issue with shooting introduced animals? If there is…why not an outcry about rabbits?
Is Thumper less cute than Bambi
Wow, some of you are pretty messed up. Killing animals to make an ad is really not that cool. This isn’t just a journo spin, it’s a pretty unfortunate barbaric mistake that will cost Lion Nathan quite a bit of money, and trust from consumers.
And I’m not saying dead animals can’t be in an ad but shooting them FOR the ad? Oops.
7:53 this is a beat up, i have it from a very good friend who worked on the campaign that the deer was sourced as a carcass and not ‘killed for the ad’….it’s a subtle difference but one worth making.
Not a beat up 7.53 nor, as 5.29 “a journalist trying to shape a story out of bits and pieces”. Read Lion’s statement, it confirmed that the deer was “diverted” on the way to the meat works for the ad. They didn’t just happen on the carcass on the side of the highway on the way to the shoot. Nor did they pop down to Woolies. No matter what you think about killing animals I think it was a low – not to mention stupid – thing to do to for an ad promoting a new green beer. Not the worst crime in the book but certainly not a good look. I wrote the story following up a tip off from someone on the production crew who felt pretty sick that they had “euthanased” a deer for the ad. So if it wasn’t a big deal – as many are suggesting in this blog – then why did both parties do their utmost to cover it up. Also Goodoil chose not to tell me why they did it or defend themselves but Goodoil did get Lion to do their bidding and plead their cause because they were “scared it might make them look bad”. At the end of the day it was Lion’s decision to pull the ad.
Mr Lee… The deer was destined for the slaughter house. Please enlighten me as to the difference of the meat coming from a farm or a butcher? The commercial needed meat for the BBQ. This is political correctness gone fucking mad. This is just another case of hunting the ad industry.
If I was Good oil I would be fucking fuming. They’ve invested in crew that obviously hate the advertising industry. If it was for a film the crew members wouldn’t be off making calls to newspapers. Nobody would give a shit! But oh yes, advertising let’s get those bastards (The ones that pay the wages).
Pathetic!
I must admit, I’m struggling to work out how else you’d get a dead deer without killing one? And if you need a dead deer, surely you find one that’s about to be killed?
Really can’t work out what the problem is? I’m dying to know what a dead deer was doing in the ad to begin with, but I really, really can’t work out what the problem with killing a deer for an ad is, if the deer was being killed anyway. All you’ve really done is take one deer away from a butcher’s order for the week.
You guys ever done some for Lion Nathan? They truly are stuffed just like the dearly departed deer. I remember when they decided to buy Victorian pubs to sell Tooheys New. Lost millions. They are fuckwits.
Good on you Julian Lee for bringing this example of bad behaviour to our attention. All involved are completely immoral! They are more interested in trying to do a cheap TVC than the ethics. How little more would it cost to create a CGI Deer? Interesting they did this in NZ ,because it would be completely illegal in Australia – check RSPCA rules on using animals in Film.
How could Lion think that this was in any way acceptable from a public relations perspective? The production company & agency were stupid to put this forward but Lion must have asked where is the Deer coming from? The message it sends is it’s ok to kill animals for personal gain / enjoyment / or fun – and eating meat is not the same as making a tv ad?
Well, it just isn’t how you do things really, is it? Unless you’re fucking mental. What if the media finds out you killed an animal to sell something worth about $3 per serve. Then imagine the animal was a graceful deer. And that the something was beer. Associate all the problems beer already promotes in the community. Times by 10 for the media beat up because the ad industry is frivolous and a one-liner’s paradise without soul or subplot. Ok, so we’re on the same page. Oh yeah. And then add another factor of 10 for the irony that the deer is the logo for the product. You did that. You fucking morons. Hows you’re next reel showing gonna go do you think? “Oh, you guys did that deer thing. FUnny story. How did it taste? Yeah, um, cool. My clients would resign the business just knowing I let you through the door if they heard that story. Bye now.”
Hope you guys vacuum packed some of that deer, cause you aren’t working much for a while.
I heard they killed several sheep for the recent Lamb campaign.
And here’s some breaking news… apparently the more effective the campaign the more sheep they will kill.
It’s a deer (Venison). Like chicken, Lamb, Beef, Crocodile, Emu, Kangaroo, et-fucking-cetra It gets killed. It goes on a barbie. Is it just Fuckwits from PETA on this site or what?
You honestly want bits of meat CGI’d??? Chops, CGI’d? If it wasn’t deer it would have been some other meat. It came from a farm and it was going to be slaughtered. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
And yes 3.09 you right. Who would have thought?
Gordon Ramsey raises pigs with his children. He tells the kids not to get attached to them because they’re going to kill them and eat them. And they will. It’s for a TV show. The f word. Is that ok? Or is it just not ok if it’s an ad? (Oh and a deer)

Now I want to see the ad.
If this turns out to be some kind of genius teaser strategy, it’s a corker…
Give it a week before its on YouTube…
Well played everyone involved.

3.18 is a creepy advertising person.
I could murder a deer sambo right now.
Apparently deers only have the intelligence of a two year old child.
If only they could cull the deer from all their ads, we’d all be happy.
good teaser. well done (like the deer…..)
Whatever they’re on, I wanna get me some!
Its a journalist, trying to shape a story out of bits and pieces. Yet again, a chance to demonize advertising. C’mon people.
And the agency is?
Dead animals on a BBQ? And Beer? together? And in a commercial? No way.
(Lion Nathan… Seriously… Have your lawyers gone fucking mad?)

5.53… Don’t be a dick head.
So, remind me again… What’s wrong with killing a deer? They’re not endangered or anything…
i love it when a plan comes together…
Green Beer is yet another greenwash product and should be avoided by anyone who doesn’t like being taken for a fool.
I’m with you 3.18. Very tough call on Goodoil.
What’s next – firing Lion Nathan employees who’ve consumed deer in the past?
Pass the barbie sauce!
Who Cares? I’m from Iowa and working down here! Is there an issue with shooting introduced animals? If there is…why not an outcry about rabbits?

Julian Lee! You would think you work for a squeaky clean industry. It sounds like the papers you write for would never indulge in arse covering.

This is not “the story” it’s made out to be.
Then again, some people do write to sell papers now don’t they.

no surprises if ….. was involved. he would have cut the jugular himself.
surprised there were no dwarves or kittens

What’s wrong with killing and eating your logo?
Lion Nathan and there symbol is a deer?
No wonder they sell shit for beer or is that deer?
I dunno, get me oughta here.
mojo genius.
I guess the folks at Lion Nathan wear fur coats, drink shark fin soup and bear bile. Dirty corporate citizens.
Doh!
A deer.
A female deer.
I’m with 5.53………D5’s talked it up pretty seriously on VB. When’s it launch?
Australia’s second largest brewer and always will be. Fuckwits have noooooo idea.

I’m gonna kill a fucking kangroo tonight and wash it down with a fucking VB.
Maybe murder a pie tomorrow.
It’s not a Deer dears, it’s venison.
One you pet. The other you eat.
