Director Robin Walters starts Tutu Films
When Robin Walters (right) started his first job as a runner in London, the producer, who came with a formidable reputation, warned him that he’d be fired if she caught him reading a newspaper on set. 12 months later he married her. 25 years later Robin and Sam (left) set up Tutu Films.
The pair worked together as director/producer team in London and Europe for 4 years before returning to New Zealand. Robin joined Black Stump Films and later Curious Film and Robber’s Dog.
He has since gained a reputation as one of the most original and perceptive directors working in the entire Asia Pacific region. Known for both comedy and drama, Robins’ work has been commended throughout the industry as some of the most honest and funniest to come out of Australasia in recent years.
Meanwhile Sam stepped away from producing to pursue her passion of photography and returned to study gaining a degree in Visual Arts at AUT. The next few years she lectured in photography and sculpture at MIT’s Dip. Visual Arts programme and travelled the length of New Zealand co-writing the award-winning book ‘Marae’ with Robin.
“We’ve been on this journey together for 25 years, lived in 4 different countries, raised 3 Orsum sons and written a book… now it’s time for new adventure… we’re very excited about working together again starting Tutu Films.
“We believe our experiences and backgrounds create a solid foundation to offer a unique perspective across all platforms. We’re passionate about the craft of film making, the people we work with and combining our talents to get the best out of the story. Tutu to us means playful and mischievous.”
