Maddocks departure confirmed
The Clemenger Group has confirmed that Richard Maddocks has resigned his role as executive creative director of Clemenger BBDO Sydney. He will be continuing at the agency for up to 6 months to ensure a seamless transition of creative leadership.
Maddocks has been with the Clemenger Group for 12 years, initially building Colenso BBDO’s world class creative reputation before moving across to Sydney two years ago.
“It’s always a loss when someone as talented as Rich decides to go their own way, but we’ve had a great relationship for over a decade, and Rich has contributed hugely to the creative reputation of Clemenger on both sides of the Tasman” said Robert Morgan, executive chairman of the Clemenger Group.
Since moving to Clemenger BBDO Sydney he has overseen the integrationof a new look creative department, and driven a turn-around in thecreative performance, culminating with recent gongs at Cannes and Goldand Silver at the New York One Show.
As well, the agency has earned a number of new business wins over thepast 18 months including BUPA, Career One, The Heart Foundation andWrigleys.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my 12 years with the Clemenger Group. At bothColenso and Clemenger Sydney I have worked with some of the industry’sbest talent and I’m grateful to the clients, staff and management forthe amazing support I’ve received over that time,” said Maddocks.
“However I’ve decided I want to work with clients under an alternativeagency structure. I’m in the early stages of discussion with severalinterested parties on how that might look. Until then, my focus will beon helping Andy, Al and the guys work through the transition.”
“Rich is a great talent and a great bloke, so it’s a shame to see himgo. Rich has helped build an incredibly strong creative department withtalent like Chris Badger, Chris Pearce and Nic Hodges, so we’re in goodshape,” said managing director Andy Pontin. “Over the next 6 months,Rich will be a key contributor in helping us to recruit his successorto ensure minimal disruption to our clients.”

Ol’ mates got some pretty big shoes to fill.
But whoever they hire is bound to beat him in the ass department though…..
unless they promote Dawso.

Berents
maybe he got sick of subway for lunch everyday
Berents, is it true Rob Morgan contacted you about taking on the role?
All-staff emails are still banned thanks to you Berents.
Mad Dog will be missed. Badly.
Some would say this is a sad loss for Clemengers. Some would say Maddocks is a true leader, a brilliant and inspirational man. In my opinion you would be very fortunate to get this person to work for you. All in all, I cannot say enough good things about this man or recommend him too highly. I can assure you that no person would do a better job and I would urge you to waste no time in making him an offer.
This might sound silly, considering some of the talent in this region of the world, but I firmly believe he’s the bet CD in Aust/NZ.
thanks for the inspirational words Misses Maddocks
Is that you Rich?
BMF?
Anyone know where he’s going??
Good work on getting a snap as he’s leaving Lynchy!
that pic is old, I’ve seen it before – that’s not him leaving!
Correction: Chris Pearce was there long before and will be there long after the next ECD has come and gone. He’s the go-to man for the really tough problems, the stuff that pays everyone’s wages. He should be CD.
Whddya reckon Rocky?
I blame Dawso’s return for Mad Dogs departure.
Good luck Rich
Clarkey
O’Sullivan Stone Maddocks.
Or time out to write his book.
I’m on a horse.
Lot’s of creatives leaving the building over there….who farted?
Get a job Clarkey
Game changer! Who’s going to play with me?
Is the rumour true it’ll be an old industry stalwart? Gazza for PM.
jwt?
Sad he’s going, but the truth is he is another in a long line of NZ CD’s who find that the grass isn’t greener over here…..it’s a tough market with all sorts of shit to deal with.
Seems like Rob Morgan has shuffled his pack of CD’s.
So that now makes a complete ex-pat Uk management team at Clems Sydney.
Standby by for a few disillusioned suit exits, following the creative exit at Clems Sydney
Clems Sydney have been on a slide since December 08. It seems they’ve either retrenched or lost a dozen or more good people from there since then. This has been on the cards for a long time.
You heard it here first.
Rookie to drop an E in front of his job title.
He’s from Melbourne 10.06. No one from NZ even knows who the Cats are.
Bad news for Clems staff but things are all good compared to the previous regime.
He won’t be the last to leave.
Not a happy place over there.
I think you’ll find Rich knew it was going to be a hard slug.
Top bloke. Good luck Rich.
I didn’t say he was a Kiwi 6.48, i said he was another NZ CD…..name one thats made it here.
Hey 4.16 where have you been, Rookie isn’t even at the agency anymore never mind adding E to his title. And I don’t think they’ll be getting him back either.
Rich’s quote about “an alternative office structure” may mean a few less process monkeys in the process.
Rich out, Toshiba in. Or was it Toshiba in, Rich out?
Come to Wieden London, Richard.
How come you posted a picture of Tom Waits?
LOL “ensure a seamless transition of creative leadership”
Why would you need that in an ad agency?

It’s called ‘Spin’ 12.40. You’ve got to learn to read between the lines. It’s all double speak. They don’t really mean it. It’s just made up to make clients and staff feel better.
big agencies say they want to be creative but at the end of the day the people running it just want a bigger boat. good luck with the next move.

2:29 thanks for that little tidbit. I’ll have to remember the next time I fire someone.
O’Sullivan Stone Maddocks Rooke.
Do I win a cake?
One of the smartest, nicest guys in Australian advertising. Says a lot about the future of Clemenger that he has decided to leave.
Seaniebee
i think rich just found it all too hard.
@ 1:11 PM… Maybe he’ll be Big in Japan.
I remember him years ago as a green junior. He was one of the best communicators I have encountered. He kept it nice and simple and stuck to the point. I would have liked to have worked with him more.
Den can do it.
Still bitter from not getting the gig at Clems, Sean?
Geez, I’ll be surprised if he really does hang around Clems for 6 months! That can’t be great for either party!
5:21 I’ll see you that and raise you a Carrasco. Garry head of Clems? Haha, love this blog.
do I see a seagull flying overhead?
Gazza’s got more sense than to go there. Clems Sydney has been cursed for years now. Everyone knows the suits rule there.
they’re a place that could do with some grown-up leadership.
Think Rich and even Guy are a teensy bit more grown-up than some of the alternatives suggested here.
So both Richard the Creative Director of Clemengers and Garry Horner the Creative Director of Whybin TBWA are changing roles?
Wow, you find out heaps on this blog. Although I don’t blame either of them.
