homepage-rotator-img_3963a.jpgMakeup Free Me charity movement founded by Merissa Mathew, is set to launch Makeup Free Me Day on August 30 along with a campaign to help promote positive body image via WebSilk and Monster and Bear.

Previously communications manager Mathew was grappling with her job at a big retail brand. She decided she wanted to do something that could make a difference in society, so in July 2012 she resigned from her job.

make-upfree.pngOne year later, July 2013, Makeup Free Me was launched. A charity movement that seeks to promote positive body image by asking participants to go makeup free on 30 August and get their friends and family to sponsor them.

All funds raised will go to the Butterfly Foundation, a charity that provides support for Australians suffering from negative body image and eating disorders.

With only 4 per cent of women believing that they are beautiful*, Mathew said the movement’s ultimate goal is to empower women to develop and nurture positive body image.

Says Mathew: “We know that being able to affect the way people value outer beauty won’t be changed in a day but we’re hoping to get people thinking about how they view themselves and their self-worth.”

With 171 (and counting) women already registered, Mathew is amazed at the response the campaign has received.

Says Mathew: “We have been so humbled by the number of women that have wrote to us to share their stories of suffering from body image issues or to send us words of support.”

Makeup Free Me has also received questions surrounding how going bare face will make a difference.

Says Mathew: “People were beginning to ask us why makeup free? How does that promote body image? So I put pen to paper, and shared more of our story and thinking in a blog post to our community. We’re looking to carry this on for years to come, and it’s inspiring to see so many Australian women up for the challenge.”

Makeup Free Me was supported by web and digital marketing agency WebSilk and video production company Monster and Bear. Public relations was managed in-house. All agencies provided their services pro-bono.

The movement is looking for a public relations agency to come onboard for Makeup Free Me 2014.

For those in Melbourne, a makeup free Girl’s Night is taking place at River’s Edge, Melbourne on 30 August with all proceeds going to the Butterfly Foundation.
